Intel looks set to get some fresh competition in the personal computer market that's sure to make a few of its shareholders sweat.
As Reuters reports, people familiar with the matter believe Nvidia is working on a design for an Arm-based CPU capable of running the Windows operating system. AMD is also working on a similar project, suggesting the days of x86 personal computers dominating the market could soon be over.
Nvidia and AMD's plans are thought to be part of Microsoft's desire to get more Windows PCs running on Arm. Apple has already proven how well Arm-based processors can work in its range of desktop PCs and laptops, offering huge gains in performance without requiring a large amount of power, and therefore battery life, to achieve them.
Until now, Qualcomm has been the only chip maker to really take up the challenge of running Windows on an Arm processor, which resulted in the Surface Pro X. Earlier this month, the company teased its Snapdragon X architecture, which it hopes will power the next generation of Windows PCs running on Arm.
It's expected that both Nvidia and AMD will have their Arm Windows chips ready by 2025, which means we could see laptops and desktops PCs running Windows 12 on these new platforms. If so, Intel will need to respond somehow if it intends to remain a viable option for personal computers.
