Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers joke that Venom is a Marvel Cinematic Universe Sinister Six member. The third installment in the MCU webslinging franchise saw the doors to the multiverse opened as Peter Parker turned to Doctor Strange in an effort to reverse Mysterio's reveal of his secret identity in the hopes of returning his life to normal. This would instead invite those aware of Parker's identity as Spider-Man from other universes to them, including Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, Thomas Haden Church's Sandman, Rhys Ifans' Lizard and Jamie Foxx's Electro.
With five villains set in Spider-Man: No Way Home, audiences began contemplating whether the filmmakers and Marvel had begun building the MCU's Sinister Six, the iconic team of supervillains in the comics who frequently fought the titular webslinger. The original incarnation of the group was formed by Doc Ock, Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Sandman and Kraven the Hunter, all but the last of whom have been introduced in the various Spider-Man movie franchises. Though Spider-Man: No Way Home ultimately didn't see the introduction of the Sinister Six, it wasn't apparently for lack of trying by the creatives behind the film.

While appearing on The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith, Spider-Man: No Way Home writers McKenna and Sommers offered new insight into the game-changing threequel. In looking at the film's pseudo inclusion of the Sinister Six, the duo joked that Tom Hardy's Venom was the sixth member of the MCU villain team, inviting fans to see him as rounding out the group.
