No more Nokia flagships! Company confirms focus on entry-level, midrange phones

Nokia flagships are happening no more! In a recent interview with the media, Adam Ferguson, HMD’s Global Head of Product Marketing, said that that it does not make any sense for HMD Global to a Nokia flagship that costs $800. Hence, a successor to the Nokia 9 PureView is probably not going to happen. The company instead wants to focus on several low-end and midrange devices.

In a report from Android Authority, Ferguson says, “Making an $800 phone doesn’t make sense for us at the moment.” He goes on to say that HMD does not “want to get too involved in a massive spec war with other players”. He also said that Nokia would want to stand for something very different.

Nokia has been staying away from the high-end smartphone space for a few years now. The Nokia 9 PureView was the last flagship phone that HMD Global launched in 2019. Ever since then, Nokia has been largely focusing on affordable and midrange models. The most expensive phone ever since then has been the Nokia XR20, which is essentially a midrange Android phone meant for those who seek a rugged smartphone with resistant to drops. The Nokia XR20 costs Rs. 46,999 in India at the moment.

Nokia’s smartphones haven’t been the most feature-rich or powerful offerings in any segment. In fact, most of Nokia’s recent launches have had outdated chipsets and older design. However, Nokia has doubled down on its promise of long Android OS update support.

But this focus on budget phones has helped the company had profitable quarters of late. HMD is now focused on building good feature phones, entry-level smartphones, and midrange smartphones. The focus is on more durable and long-lasting phones that offer long battery life and hit affordable prices.
