Nintendo Switch has reached another milestone — passing a total combined sales of more than 125 million consoles, since its release in March 2017. As reported during their latest earnings release earlier today, Nintendo confirmed that an additional 18 million units have been sold during this latest financial year, though have stated this is down by more than a fifth, compared with the previous year. Though they once more point to the issue of acquiring semiconductors and other such components for production around Summer time, Nintendo also acknowledge that sales during the Holiday period also underperformed compared to the previous year.
It means the Switch remains Nintendo’s second best-selling system, including both home consoles and handheld devices alike. Leap-frogging Sony’s PS4 further afield as far as overall best-selling consoles goes, but still a ways behind the PS2. It’s the Nintendo DS that remains the best-selling Nintendo system with a total of around 154 million units. Though perhaps the most interesting/comical stat to take away from today’s news of the Switch reaching 125 million, is that it’s now closing in on selling more than ten times that of Nintendo’s previous console, the Wii U, which only managed around 13.5 million during its own lifespan.
On the software side, total sales of Switch games have now crossed the billion mark with Nintendo also reporting an overall slight decline in sales during this same period. As a result, there are now a total of 35 games on the system that have passed the million copies sold mark — 22 of which are Nintendo’s own titles and 13 are that of third-party publishers.
