The Nintendo Switch Online app has received its first major update since launch, which has improved the UI design and added new Friend List features. The app is used to get around many of the Nintendo Switch's missing features like voice chat, with owners having to jump through extra hoops in order to talk to their friends while playing.
The voice chat on Nintendo Switch Online is done through the Nintendo Switch Online app on smartphones, though the voice chat option is only available for a few compatible games, like Splatoon 2 or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Once the game is loaded, the player can use the app to choose to communicate with other players. Most consider this feature to be unnecessary when playing with friends, as it's arguably a lot easier to just set up a Discord room than to set up via the app each time. In order to use the Nintendo Switch Online app, the player also needs a Nintendo Account and must be a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber.

The Nintendo Switch Online app has only received a few updates since launch and those were mostly bug fixes or making more games compatible with voice chat. The Ver. 2.0.0 update for the app has just launched and it has added new features, as well as changed its design. According to the update history on the Apple App Store page, the Ver. 2.0.0 version of the app has updated its overall design, players can now see if their friends are online, they can their online status settings, and can now also view their friend code.
