The Super Mario Bros. Movie hits cinemas today which means there's going to be a lot of news about it and other things related to the plumber in the coming days. Since Mario now has an animated blockbuster, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto was asked when we might see him in a new adventure on the Switch, and the director had a promising, albeit rather vague answer for Mario fans.
“Well, all I can say is please stay tuned for future Nintendo Directs,” Miyamoto replied, a cheeky smile spreading across his face as he answered. The smile might well give away more than the actual answer. There's always a Direct on the horizon even though Nintendo doesn't tend to confirm when they're happening until a day or two before.

It has also already been effectively confirmed that Nintendo is hard at work on the next Mario game. Not only has it been six years since Super Mario Odyssey, the last new and unique Mario game, but Miyamoto previously confirmed the studio is always working on at least one Mario game at any given time.
Miyamoto's latest answer has simply reminded Mario fans that something new is probably coming sooner rather than later. Although it has been six years since Odyssey, Mario went on a new, far smaller adventure via Bowser's Fury. Additional content tacked onto Super Mario 3D World's Switch port. Three of the plumber's previous adventures were also packaged together and sold to celebrate his 35th anniversary via Super Mario 3D All-Stars.
