J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek are set to star in Amazon Prime Video’s new sci-fi show Night Sky, which now has an official release date for when it will hit the streaming platform. Night Sky, originally titled Lightyears, stars Simmons and Spacek as Irene and Franklin York; a couple who discover a doorway to a distant planet hidden beneath their backyard. After years of hiding their inexplicable secret, the Yorks’ lives are turned upside down by the arrival of an enigmatic young man (played by The Newsreader’s Chai Hansen) who leads them to discover that the mystery is even more complicated than they had ever originally believed.
Prime Video has now announced that Night Sky will debut on the streaming platform globally on Friday, May 20. The eight-part series will drop all episodes simultaneously. Night Sky comes from Legendary Television and is written by newcomer show-runner Holden Miller. Among the producers is Gotham’s Thomas J. Whelan and Emmy-winning executive producer Philip Martin.

Recent Amazon original shows that have proved successful on Prime Video include action thriller Reacher and Star Trek: Picard season 2. Simmons, who has previously lent his voice to Prime Video’s animated series Invincible, is fresh off of Hollywood hits including Spider-Man: No Way Home and is currently nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Being the Ricardos. Spacek has been less active as of late and this new series marks her first project since her last Amazon series, Homecoming, in 2018.
