Nier: Automata’s fifth anniversary is fast approaching and anyone hoping that publisher Square Enix and/or director Yoko Taro would have something to say about it is going to be quite happy. The game’s official Twitter account has not only acknowledged the anniversary but has also announced a special livestream for the occasion.
It appears to be Japanese only unfortunately, with it airing via Nico Nico, but diehard fans will no doubt want to check it out regardless, or at least pay attention to what could possibly be shown during it. The announcement hasn’t provided any specifics, but it is teasing that new information could be shown. It’s also unclear if it will be specifically related to Nier: Automata or even the Nier series as a whole.

The stream will be held on Wednesday, February 23rd — the same day Nier: Automata released in Japan back in 2017 (the West didn’t get it until the following March) — and starts at 6pm. Since this is presumably Japanese time, it means the stream won’t air for Westerners until 1am PST / 4am EST / 9am GMT.
As for what could be shown during the stream, the obvious hope is that a sequel to Nier: Automata will be announced. Yoko Taro has said that the Nier series is finished unless he’s given more money for it, but his reputation and eccentric nature mean his claim shouldn’t be taken seriously. Both Nier: Automata and Nier: Replicant were financial successes, with the former pushing more than 6 million copies as of last July, which practically guarantees a bright future for the series.
