Indie marketplace itch.io has gone all out in its attack on NFTs, even as Ubisoft tries to win its own staff round to the concept.
Despite many game companies being forced to cancel their NFT plans in the face of public outcry, with Team17’s Worms NFTs being the most recent, there’s still little sign that bigger publishers have got the message.
Now, itch.io, a marketplace for indie games, has shared its stance on NFTs and didn’t even attempt to hide its contempt for the idea and those who endorse them.
‘NFTs are a scam. If you think they are legitimately useful for anything other than the exploitation of creators, financial scams, and the destruction of the planet then we ask that you please re-evaluate your life choices,’ it said on Twitter.
It added: ‘F**k any company that says they support creators and also endorses NFTs in any way. They only care about their own profit and the opportunity for wealth above anyone else.’
So far, it appears smaller studios and companies have little interest in supporting NFTs, as opposed to big names like Konami and Square Enix, the former having already made quite a lot of money out of them and the latter seeing potential in blockchain technology and play-to-earn mechanics.
Ubisoft in particular also remains unrepentant, despite the criticism, with Kotaku revealing that it has been gifting NFTs to its own employees, even though those same employees are no more enthusiastic about them than the general public.
Specifically, certain members of the team working on Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint were treated to in-game hats to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary.
