Rumours suggest that God Of War may be turned into a new streaming show by the creators of The Expanse and Wheel Of Time.
Yet another video game franchise is supposedly being adapted as a TV series, with Amazon said to be in negotiations with Sony to get the rights to God Of War.
A Deadline report suggests that The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, along with The Wheel Of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins, are involved in discussions, which suggests a significant amount of money will be involved.
Fergus and Ostby won an Oscar for co-writing Children Of Men and also co-wrote the first Iron Man, so they’re big hitters. Although no-one’s involvement is guaranteed, in these sort of situations, until the deal is signed.
God Of War seems a difficult game to adapt for a number of reasons, not least the expense of recreating a fantasy version of Ancient Greece.
There’s also the problem that Kratos in the pre-PlayStation 4 games is a thoroughly objectionable, if not outright evil, protagonist – one that’s difficult to imagine working as the star of a big budget fantasy film.
The obvious solution to that is to base the series only on the newer Norse duology, but then you’ve got the problem of finding an actor that looks like Kratos and yet sounds like Christopher Judge.
Maybe Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Dave Bautista could do it, as he is a surprisingly good actor, but while The Rock seems to fit the part even more he hasn’t really put much effort into dramatic acting for years.
The news is the latest in a long line of video game adaptations for TV, with The Last Of Us coming to Netflix and Twisted Metal, of all things, due to debut on Peacock (Universal’s streaming service).
