Santa Monica Studio’s God of War could be the next PlayStation property that makes the journey to TV via Amazon. This information comes from Deadline, which reported that Amazon Prime Video is in talks to develop a live-action TV series based on the game. The report also revealed that Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, creators and executive producers of The Expanse, will likely helm the show.
As of now, neither Sony nor Amazon has commented on whether this is indeed the case. It’s still very early days, though, and it could be some time before we get an official word on the show’s existence. But, considering PlayStation and Sony’s recent strides towards the big-screen, it would make sense for God of War to join the lineup.
The idea of a God of War TV show isn’t all that surprising. After all, PlayStation already has a few live-action projects for a number of its titles. For starters, Uncharted‘s film adaptation was recently released to fairly decent audience reception. Then we have The Last of Us, which is currently being filmed and may release sometime in 2023. Toss in Twisted Metal, and a few murmurings here and there about a Ghost of Tsushima film, and PlayStation’s got a healthy lineup.
Video game adaptations in general are more popular than ever. Last year saw the release of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and Mortal Kombat, although they didn’t exactly amaze audiences of either fan base. There have also been some rumors floating around that a Mass Effect TV show could be on its way as well. It’s clear that studios want to adapt as many of these series’ to film and TV as they can. And Netflix’s Arcane, a prequel to League of Legends, is proof that it can work.
