Splatoon 3 is just months away from arriving on the Switch, and Nintendo is using that time to tease our terrifying secrets about the world of Splatoon.
Three new screenshots shared on the Japanese Splatoon 3 Twitter account reveal “mysterious structures” from a place called "Alterna." There’s no explanation for these areas, but the screenshots show a riot of floating shards from what’s likely a bygone era--at least, in the world of Splatoon.

The first image has a background that appears like it might be some sort of dock or parking garage. Pipes, power lines, and a staircase are all floating in midair without any visible cause. The second image is even weirder, with a background that looks like a building under construction and filled with shattered, floating statues. Wooden planks appear to be filled with maze-like designs that defy all explanation.
The third is perhaps the strangest of all, with an entire city built on the inside of a gigantic tube. Could this inverted metropolis be Alterna, or is Alterna something more?
Splatoon fans noted a few details in the three images. In the first, an inkling is wearing an ink tank shaped like a water bottle. In the second, those broken statues appear to be famous works of art like Venus de Milo and Michelangelo's David. And in the third, the Inkling appears to have some sort of earpiece.
This is a total guess, but Alterna might be an area that relates to the reason why humans went extinct thousands of years ago, paving the way for squid and octopus to evolve. Everything shown looks like the remnants of human civilization, while the floating bits could be the result of whatever cataclysmic event wiped out humanity.
