An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player has discovered the game's internal clock cannot go past the end of the year 2060, seemingly marking an end date for the game. Until now, it was generally assumed the game was endless and could theoretically be played indefinitely, as there is no way to truly beat Animal Crossing: New Horizons. However, this new discovery could possibly mean that players will eventually run out of play time on their island.
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it's not hard for some fans to find something to do on their island every day — there are always tasks that can be done or projects that can be completed on a player's ever-changing island. This ability partially stems from the title's real-time system, where days and seasons pass in-game just as they do in real life. However, this mechanic can also become frustrating for some players who wish for things on their island to progress faster, which is where time travel becomes a useful tool for some. To time travel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players can alter the date and time on their Nintendo Switch, which syncs to the in-game clock system.

Reddit user AdTrue4863 ran into a time-traveling snag this week that they shared online, which indicates a possible end date for the title. After attempting to travel to a date far in the future by changing the time on their Nintendo Switch, the user was met with an odd error message. It seems that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is unable to open with a date past the end of 2060, and could be rendered unplayable at that time. The text reads "Please close the game from the HOME Menu and restart after setting a date between 1/1/2000 and 31/12/2060."
