The Nintendo Switch is in a prime place to resurrect one of Pokémon’s well-loved yet often forgotten spin-offs, Pokémon Conquest. Pokémon Conquest is a turn-based strategy RPG that originally released on Nintendo DS in 2012. Players battled to maintain control of the Ransei region, allocating their troops to different areas to hold them down and potentially capture neighboring land.
This particular gameplay element comes from the Koei Tecmo series Nobunaga’s Ambition, in which players take control of units based on Sengoku-era historical figures to reenact, unsurprisingly, Nobunaga’s ambition to unify Japan. Pokémon Conquest is a crossover with this series, which is more obvious in Japan, where the game is distinctly titled Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition. The name was likely changed internationally due to general audience unfamiliarity with the Nobunaga’s Ambition series, since most of its games weren’t localized from their original Japanese releases.

Pokémon Conquest’s unique blend of elements don’t stop there, though: the character designs of the historical figures, who team up with various Pokémon to form a unit similar to Pokémon Masters EX’s sync pairs, are taken from the Samurai Warriors series. Samurai Warriors is one of Koei Tecmo’s many Warriors series, this one focusing on the Sengoku era. With so many different influences, Pokémon Conquest was a truly one-of-a-kind title that unfortunately hasn’t seen a comeback. Now is a great time for such a revival, however, since the Nintendo Switch’s success has also brought with it an increase in demand for what would otherwise be considered Conquest’s more niche elements.
