New report backs claims Rockstar shelved remasters to fully focus on GTA 6
A new report has claimed Rockstar is fully focused on development of Grand Theft Auto 6 after shelving a pair of remaster projects.
Earlier this week, a Rockstar insider who’s accurately leaked information about the company’s games in the past claimed remasters of GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption “were on the table a few years ago” but are no longer planned.
They also claimed the poor reception to last year’s Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy remasters might have contributed to the decision not to go ahead with the projects.
Kotaku has since backed up these claims. Citing sources with knowledge of Rockstar’s plans, it says the studio has—temporarily at least—parked the remasters to fully focus on GTA 6.
The studio confirmed in February that “active development” on GTA 6 was “well underway”.
And Kotaku’s sources claim Rockstar is hoping people will forget about the botched GTA remasters by the time it gets rounds to releasing the next series entry.
They also said the Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV remasters aren’t completely “out of scope” and could be revisited in the future following GTA 6’s release.
Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition in November 2021, promising modern remasters of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
However, the highly anticipated collection released with a significant number of technical issues, as well as unintended documents within its game files such as unlicensed music and developer notes.
Rockstar subsequently apologised to fans for the state of the game and promised a series of updates to improve the title.
