Producer Denise Ream, who worked on The Good Dinosaurwith Sohn and Pixar’s Cars 2 in 2011, is also involved in the project. Sohn’s The Good Dinosaur received mixed reviews, overshadowed by the stellar Inside Out, released earlier that year. Elemental could be Sohn’s chance to break out within Pixar. Elemental is currently the studio’s only release set for 2023. Fans of Pixar’s recent work will be eager to see what Sohn has in store for this new entry into the Pixar universe.
While the COVID-19 pandemic raged on, the studio released Luca on DisDney+ in June 2021, which received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 2022 ceremony, losing to the Walt Disney Studios musical Encanto. Pixar won the Best Animated Feature Oscar both years previously, with 2020’s Soul and 2019’s Toy Story 4. Perhaps when Elemental releases in theaters on June 16, 2023, it will conquer the 2023 Oscar ceremony.
