Horizon Forbidden West is already a visually stunning spectacle on both PlayStation consoles, and a newly released update patch enhances its graphics further. Earlier this year, players dived once more into the beautiful-yet-perilous post-apocalyptic world built by developer Guerilla Games as Aloy journeyed into the titular Forbidden West to gather the lost fragments of a terraforming AI and uncover the secrets of a sinister organization named Far Zenith.
Along the way, Aloy meets new allies, makes dangerous new enemies, and sees more of the world introduced to players in the original Horizon: Zero Dawn. As Horizon Forbidden West marked the growing series’ jump into the current console generation on the PlayStation 5, it featured a significant upgrade in graphics when compared to the already impressive Zero Dawn, with better facial animations and water effects that wowed players as early as Horizon Forbidden West’s pre-launch story trailers. These graphical improvements helped make Horizon’s beautiful landscapes and unique Machine enemies all the more impressive to look at, and developer Guerilla Games isn't finished building on Forbidden West’s eye-catching graphics just yet.

Guerilla Games has announced the release of Horizon Forbidden West’s Patch 1.17 update, sharing a video on its YouTube channel. According to a subsequent post on r/horizon, this downloadable update adds several new graphical enhancements to Forbidden West, such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) to improve dynamic resolution scaling on 60Hz, High Refresh Rate (HFR) that targets refresh rate between 60Hz and 120Hz, and a new "Balanced" Graphics Mode that can run the game at 40Hz on supported
