A new Higurashi manga spin-off will premiere in the March issue of Futabasha's Monthly Action, the magazine revealed on Tuesday. The upcoming Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Oni manga will debut on February 25 and will be featured on the March issue’s front page.
The series is set in the Taisho Era in 1923 and follows the exploits of Oryō Sonozaki. The series will be illustrated by Shin Slayers: Falces no Sunadokei artist, Asahi.

Ryukishi07’s Higurashi When They Cry sound novels were released in Japan from 2002-2006, with a variety of compilation titles and game-exclusive arcs released following the conclusion of the original series. Various manga adaptations of the different story arcs in the game were released from 2005-2011 in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace magazine and Square Enix’s Gangan Powered, Gangan Wing, GFantasy, Monthly Shōnen Gangan, and Monthly Gangan Joker.
A 26-episode anime adaptation from Studio Deen aired during the Spring and Summer 2006 seasons, followed by a second 24-epsiode series, When They Cry: Kai, which aired during the Summer and Fall 2007 seasons. Chiaki Kon (Nodame Cantabile, Golden Time) directed both seasons, with Toshifumi Kawase (Eyeshield 21, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam) handling the series composition and Kenji Kawai (Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Mob Psycho 100) contributing the score. The popularity of the anime inspired a variety of OVA series between 2007-2013.
