Yo Joe! The 'Real American Hero' is getting ready to do battle, as a new line of 7-inch G.I Joe action figures has been unveiled and available for pre-order at Entertainment Earth. G.I. Joe first hit the stage in the mid-1960s with Hasbro's line of 12-inch «action figures.» They were designed to offer a boy-focused counterpart to dolls that were so popular with young girls. Each Joe figure represented one of the four branches of the U.S. armed forces, with the Action Soldier (U.S. Army), Action Sailor (U.S. Navy), Action Pilot (U.S. Air Force), Action Marine (U.S. Marine Corps). The line proved very popular, and while the focus moved away from the military during the Vietnam War, it remained a best-seller into the 70s.
The 1980s saw a huge resurgence for the G.I. Joe toy line. In 1982, the line was relaunched as 3.75-inch scale figures, with vehicles, playsets, and a nemesis for the Joes to do battle with. The G.I. Joe Team fought the evil Cobra organization, which attempted to take over the Free World through terrorism. The line was also accompanied by a wildly successful animated series, which only helped propel toy sales. It has gone to spawn a variety of comics, video games and animated reboots. In 2009, the first live-action film was released, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra., which was followed by G.I. Joe: Retaliation in 2013, and Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, last year. A fourth film, G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant, has been confirmed to be in active development.
