If you bought a Nest Hub Max over a regular Nest Hub, you may have done so because of the larger screen, better speakers, or the addition of the camera. If that last one applies to you, we have some bad news: Google Meet will stop working on Sept. 28, followed by Zoom on Sept. 30.
The news was first spotted by 9to5Google, but Zoom announced its decision on July 19, stating simply: "The Zoom application for these devices will stop functioning, and no further updates will be made available. New installations or application sign-ins on Google Nest Hub Max will not be possible after the end of support."
The loss of video-conferencing capability leaves precious little functionality for the Nest Hub Max's camera. Google removed games in June, and while it's possible to view the camera through the Google Home app, it's not the most convenient angle. Frequently, the Google Home app has trouble connecting to the Max's camera, making the feature even less useful.
That leaves gesture capabilities and Look and Talk, which lets you gaze at the Nest Hub Max and use voice commands without the trigger phrase. The Nest Hub Max released in 2019, and it's a shame to see it lose so many features in just a few years.
The Nest Hub Max is still available for purchase, and there's been no indication of a successor to replace it. But all things considered, the Pixel Tablet is probably the better buy. While it's more expensive, it serves the same functions as the Nest Hub Max while also providing a tablet you can take with you and a full Android OS to boot.
