NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover has captured something mysterious on the red planet. The Mars rover mission, which aims to look at signs of past life on the red planet, has seen a shiny piece of foil stuck on a rock on Mars. According to NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover team, the piece of the shiny foil is actually a thermal blanket that they think may have come from the descent stage of the rocket that landed the rover on the planet! But the interesting fact is that the descent stage crashed about 2 kilometres away from the planet back in 2021.
“That shiny bit of foil is part of a thermal blanket – a material used to control temperatures. It’s a surprise finding this here: My descent stage crashed about 2 km away. Did this piece land here after that, or was it blown here by the wind?” NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover tweeted. along with an image captured by the Mars rover's left Mastcam-Z camera on June 13. The image shows a piece of shiny foil having dots all over the surface. Also read: Hubble Telescope captures giant star 32x larger than Sun, but it will die first! Check breathtaking NASA photo
Besides this, the social media team of NASA's Mars rover also tweeted about the people at NASA JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) who wrapped these thermal blankets on the device. The tweet mentions, “Think of them as spacecraft dressmakers. They work with sewing machines and other tools to piece together these unique materials.” These thermal blankets also help to regulate the temperature of the spacecraft during the critical entry stage, descent as well as the landing process.
