Tom Nook as a character has been in the Animal Crossing series since the first game on the GameCube. While players have always associated him with being the villager's moneylender, Tom Nook has changed across the Animal Crossing series, going from a struggling businessman, to the owner of an island in New Horizons. Redd was Tom's rival in the painting market, but with Nook's new role, Redd has now become the player's primary means of acquiring artwork — even though he's less reliable than Tom Nook, who formerly would sell paintings guaranteed to be legitimate, while players took a gamble buying from Redd.

Redd's introduction to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in update 2.1 brought paintings to New Horizons and a museum wing to display them in. Redd also made an appearance, since neither Tom Nook nor the Nooklings sell paintings any longer, which means that not only does the player have too seek Redd out at his boat to acquire new artwork, they have to be sharp-eyed to determine if the paintings are real or fake. Some fans even think the propensity for forgeries should lead to Redd going to Animal Crossing jail.
