Ordered as a pilot, New Warriors originally featured actress Milana Vayntrub cast as Squirrel Girl (also known as Doreen Green). Known for her bizarre ability to talk to squirrels and her offbeat sense of humor, since Squirrel Girl’s first appearance in the comics in 1991, the character has developed a cult following from readers. However, despite a well-reviewed screening, according to show lead Kevin Biegel, New Warriors was canceled for being “too gay” and denied Marvel’s rodent-themed superhero her MCU debut.

Although Squirrel Girl has yet to appear onscreen in the MCU, she has appeared alongside Kamala as her crime-fighting co-star in the animated series Marvel Rising. Allowing for unique interactions and a fun team dynamic, Kamala and Doreen’s relationship as friends and vigilantes allowed them to showcase the best parts of their personalities, usually lost in other adaptations. Introducing Squirrel Girl in Ms. Marvel could be the premise for a new season and finally give the character the live-action treatment she deserves after Marvel unceremoniously canceled New Warriors.
