The new Mortal Kombat was unveiled in an earnings call back in February, spiralling into rumours, leaks, and unending speculation, but now it's finally official. Mortal Kombat 1 is real, continuing the story of 11 with a rebooted universe helmed by Fire God Liu Kang, and it launches on September 19.
The trailer shows us a glimpse at Liu Kang's new world, a peaceful utopia that is a far cry from the brutality of the Mortal Kombat timelines we've seen across the series' history. However, that peace is quickly shattered in a gory montage spectacle that brings Mortal Kombat right back to where you expect it. Understandably, ripping people's eyes out and snapping necks upsets Liu Kang, leading nicely into the game's story.
"You have chosen to defy peace," Liu Kang says. "Then you have chosen war with a God."

Mortal Kombat 1 is a current-gen exclusive, launching on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but interestingly, it'll join MK11 on Nintendo Switch. If you pre-order it ahead of its September 19 release date, you'll get early access on September 14 and be able to partake in an August beta. It'll set you back $69.99 for the base version or $109.99 for the Premium Edition, which will come with the Kombat Pack, 1,250 Dragon Krystals, and five Kameo Fighters.
The Kombat Pack includes a Johnny Cage character skin and early access to six new playable characters that will be made available post-launch. The JC skin is based on famed actor and martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme.
