Warning: Spoilers for Moon Knight episode 1
The goal of Moon Knight’s villain makes Thanos’ plan in Avengers: Infinity War even worse. Years after the defeat of the Mad Titan, the MCU has introduced yet another character with big ideas about what needs to happen for the world to be a better place. Played by Ethan Hawke, Moon Knight’s Arthur Harrow is poised to be the main antagonist of the show’s titular hero.
While much still hasn’t been revealed about Hawke’s mystery character, Moon Knight episode 1 has shed light on who Arthur Harrow really is and what his association with Steven (Oscar Isaac) is. Based on the events of the episode, Arthur is a cult leader who is already engaged in a conflict with Moon Knight, though the details of their history are unknown for the time being. And whereas Moon Knight is a champion of the Egyptian god of the moon, Arthur worships Ammit, an evil deity associated with the underworld. Somehow, Arthur’s mysterious tattoo grants him the ability to judge – and kill – his own cult members.

Arthur’s explanation for what Ammit wants in Moon Knight episode 1 draws some interesting parallels to what Thanos envisioned, and they actually expose some of the biggest flaws in the latter villain’s plan. According to Arthur, Ammit was a “boogeyman” for “evildoers”, meaning that they were her only targets. Arthur believes that setting her free will lead to the deaths of these people before their sins can be committed, and that the world will benefit from this change.
