Mobile games could soon get a big graphics overhaul, thanks to ARM’s new GPUs for smartphones. Most of you have known ARM for making its Mali series graphics units for various non-Snapdragon chips. ARM is now taking the game up with its new Immortalis-G715 GPU – ARM’s first GPU to support hardware accelerated ray tracing. That’s big for mobile games, considering the graphics improvements that could come to mobile games soon. The only other mobile chipset to support hardware ray tracing is Samsung’s Exynos 2200 powering the European Galaxy S22 series.
The hardware accelerated ray tracing can help the chipset to offer much better ray tracing performance than its previous software-based ray tracing, promising up to 300% gains. Chipsets using the Immortalis-G715 GPU are expected to come in 2023, and MediaTek has already hinted at using it. That means we could expect the successor to the Dimensity 9000 using the Immortalis-G715 GPU next year.
Other than the Immortalis-G715, ARM also revealed two lower powered midrange GPU in the Mali series. One of them is called the Mali-G715 GPU while the other one is a Mali-G615. These two only vary with regards to their core counts – the G615 will have 6 or lesser cores, while the G715 has between 7 to 9 cores.
All of these GPU’s support Variable Rate Shading, which allows games to gain up to 40% better frame rates while reducing the power consumption. The GPU in themselves offer up to 15 percent improvement in performance.
What does this all mean for the layman? A more advanced GPU like this could help game developers reduce the differences between mobile gaming and console gaming. Mobile gaming is a booming industry at the moment, drawing in lots of attention and investment from consumers
