Michelle Rodriguez has said she has no interest in coming back to reprise her Avatar character, Trudy, in a future film in the sci-fi series. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Rodriguez said director James Cameron told her that he was thinking about bringing Rodriguez back to the Avatar series, but she isn't down to play Trudy again.
Trudy, a pilot who helped the Na'vi in battle by sacrificing herself, died heroically at the end of the 2009 original Avatar. Rodriguez said she told Cameron about potentially resurrecting Trudy, «You can't do that--I died as a martyr, Jim.»
Rodriguez has been down this path before. Her characters in Resident Evil and Machete came back in future installments when they weren't supposed to, she said, and she doesn't want to do it again.
«That would be overkill!» she said (via Variety). «I don't understand, it's so weird. I guess they don't know what to do with the girl who doesn't have a boyfriend. 'She doesn't have a boyfriend. Should we keep her alive, or kill her?'»
It's not immediately clear if Cameron was suggesting that Rodriguez return to Avatar to play Trudy again or a different character, which wouldn't be uncharted territory for the sci-fi series. After all, Sigourney Weaver's character, Dr. Grace Augustine, died in the original movie. Weaver played a young Na'vi girl named Kiri in The Way of Water, prompting some to believe Kiri might be the reincarnated Dr. Grace. That question remains unanswered, though.
Avatar and The Way of Water are the No. 1 and No. 3 highest-grossing movies of all time. Avatar 3 will be released in December 2024, featuring evil Na'vi characters for the first time. «I want to show the Na'vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides,»
