Nintendo revealed two new game modes coming to Metroid Dread today, as well as a Boss Rush mode that will be available later this year.
Dread Mode is an ultra-difficulty setting that restricts Samus' health to one HP. A single hit from any source will result in death, meaning Dread Mode will be the ultimate challenge for hardcore Metroid Dread players. Alternatively, Rookie Mode is an easier game mode that will help newcomers to the series more easily contend with the game's challenges. Both modes are available today as part of a free update.
In April, Metroid Dread will add a Boss Rush mode as a second free update. This mode will feature all the boss fights from Metroid Dread in a separate challenge mode, so players can practice their fighting strategies.
At launch, Metroid Dread only had two difficulty modes: Normal and Hard. Despite being well-reviewed, many newcomers had difficulty progressing through the game even on the Normal setting. The new Rookie mode will provide players with passive energy recovering so that they can survive some of the game's more difficult encounters.
This is the first time a Metroid game will include a Boss Rush mode, a feature made popular by other Metroidvania games like Hollow Knight, Salt and Sanctuary, and Sundered. The new mode will likely feature all ten bosses from Metroid Dread and give players the opportunity to try out some of the alternate kill strategies for Kraid without needing to replay the game from the start.
