Metroid Dread adds new difficulty modes, with Boss Rush mode to follow
Nintendo has released a free Metroid Dread update introducing two new difficulty modes.
For experienced players seeking an extra challenge, there’s Dread Mode, which causes a game over if players get hit once.
On the other end of the scale, newcomers can try out Rookie Mode, which offers increased recovery and less damage from bosses.
A second free update set for release in April will add a Boss Rush mode, which will let players take on a stream of bosses until they’re defeated.
Metroid Dread could already be the series’ all-time best-seller, according to Nintendo’s latest financial results.
Last week, the company confirmed Dread – which released for Nintendo Switch in October – had sold 2.74 million units as of the end of December 2021.
Although public sales data for the entire Metroid series is hard to come by, no Metroid title has ever been reported to sell more than three million units.
Metroid Dread developer MercurySteam is working on a third-person action RPG set in a dark fantasy world, it was announced in November.
Codenamed Project Iron, the multiplatform game has an initial development budget of €27 million ($30.7 million).
The Project Iron IP is co-owned by MercurySteam and Digital Bros, the parent company of 505 Games, which will co-publish the game.
