Meta is removing one of its more controversial features—mandatory Facebook accounts. If you want to log into your Quest VR headset, you currently need a Facebook profile, something that not everybody is comfortable with or wants. That changes from August.
"You won't need a Facebook account to log into Quest starting next month," CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote. "We're rolling out new Meta accounts that you can use with our VR headsets instead. This will give everyone more choice about how you show up in the metaverse."

You'll still need to create an account to log in as Zuckerberg mentioned. But it's a new system called Meta which is required to use its VR headsets. However, in a follow-up tweet, Meta Quest clarified that "if you previously merged your Facebook and Oculus accounts, you'll have the choice to remove Facebook altogether as part of the Meta account setup process.
"A Meta account lets you log into Meta VR devices, while a Facebook account lets you use Facebook," Meta Quest continued. "You can add your Meta and Facebook accounts to Accounts Center to get access to connected experiences, such as using Messenger in VR."
All purchases, achievements, friends, and other VR information will also be transferred so that you can keep your progress. This is part of the new Meta account system that is leaving the name and branding Oculus behind. If you still have an Oculus account as some have highlighted in the comments, you'll have to update by January 1, 2023. Otherwise, you won't be able to access and use Meta VR devices.
Regardless, you won't need to tie Facebook to your VR experience anymore, with Meta acting in a similar way to a Steam or Epic Games
