The controversial ending to Mass Effect 3 was originally meant to set up the events of a fourth installment, as revealed by one of the writers behind the 2012 sci-fi RPG. For three games, players followed the fully-customizable Mass Effect hero Commander Shepard and their growing crew of squadmates on a galaxy-spanning mission to defeat the Reapers — an armada of sentient AI-controlled warships that wish to eradicate all organic life in the universe. As Mass Effect players uncovered more details about the Reapers and the many forces under their control, they would guide Shepard through an array of narrative and dialogue choices that determined which of their teammates would live or die throughout each installment and how the overall story arc of the three Mass Effect titles would play out.
It initially appeared that all of these choices and the consequences thereof would come to a head during the final section of Mass Effect 3, which saw Shepard lead the forces that they’ve rallied throughout the entire game in a last-ditch effort to defeat the Reapers on Earth. However, the events of Mass Effect 3's final mission would prove to be extremely contentious among fans, to the point where developer BioWare released a free DLC expansion titled Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut to provide more context for Shepard’s seemingly limited final choice. Even years after Mass Effect 3’s conclusion, fans are still divided over whether or not it provided a satisfying end to the series, and some have even used mods to rewrite Mass Effect 3’s final chapter as they see fit.
