Through Ms. Marvel, Marvel Studios suggests that Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) is failing the legacy of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) after his death. After more than a decade since originally assuming his superhero persona, Tony Stark ended his MCU arc by performing a heroic sacrifice to save the universe. Iron Man's snap in Avengers: Endgame defeated Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his minions, guaranteeing the Sacred Timeline was forever free from the Mad Titan's threat.
Iron Man's death marked the end of the Infinity Saga for the MCU, and the franchise is moving forward in Phase 4 with a brand new storytelling chapter. Marvel Studios has been busy laying the groundwork for the universe's next overarching narrative by focusing both on its remaining heroes and introducing new ones, including Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Jersey City native who gets her own superpowers like her Avenger idols. Given Kamala's obsession with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Ms. Marvel has included meta-references to the wider MCU within its own story. However, Ms. Marvel also contains one unexpected connection to Iron Man with the involvement of the Department of Damage Control — an organization created by Tony after the Battle of New York.
