Hawkeye was nowhere to be seen throughout Avengers: Infinity War, but Avengers: Endgame opens with a scene focused on him and his family, and Marvel admits Endgame wouldn’t have worked without showing that tragic moment. The first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, collectively known as the Infinity Saga, focused on Thanos’ quest to acquire the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet in order to fulfill his plans of bringing balance to the universe by wiping out half of life in the universe – and he finally got what he wanted in Avengers: Infinity War.
Thanos got the stones and the gauntlet in Avengers: Infinity War but not without having to fight most of the active MCU heroes, but in the end, he made half of the universe vanish with the snap of his fingers. Avengers: Endgame saw the surviving heroes joining forces to get the Infinity Stones before Thanos did through a Time Heist, building a new gauntlet, and bringing back those who vanished, which later led to a massive battle between all current MCU heroes and Thanos and his armies. Joining the fight was Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), who during Infinity War was on house arrest as a result of the events of Captain America: Civil War.

Avengers: Endgame not only brought Hawkeye back for the biggest mission and battle the MCU has seen so far, but it also addressed what happened to him after the events of Civil War.
