Prime Video reveals the first story details for their upcoming The Lord of the Rings series. The beloved novel from J.R.R. Tolkien is an enduring, influential classic of the fantasy genre, and Peter Jackson's trilogy of films, which released in successive years from 2001-03, have enjoyed a similar impact on its cinematic equivalent. The Lord of the Rings movies remain some of the most acclaimed and successful ever made, with fans having celebrated The Fellowship of the Ring's 20th anniversary just last December.
In 2017, Amazon bought the television rights to the franchise, promising a series of at least five seasons for their Prime Video streaming service. Few details of the show's subject matter have been released, other than confirmation it would be set during Middle-earth's Second Age, placing it thousands of years before the events of either The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay serve as showrunners, and directorial duties for season 1's eight episodes were split between J.A. Bayona, Wayne Che Yip, and Charlotte Brändström.

The name hints at a crucial event in the era's history — the forging of the Rings of Power — though the show promises to tackle other major milestones as well, including Sauron's initial rise to prominence and his wars with both elves and men. The characters will revisit some iconic locations from the films, such as the Misty Mountains, while also traveling to previously unseen places, such as the island kingdom of Númenor. Check out
