Mel Gibson opens up about how the Lethal Weapon 5 directing process is bittersweet as he takes over from franchise helmer Richard Donner. The action buddy comedy franchise revolves around Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, two Los Angeles Police detectives and their various explosive cases working together. Lethal Weapon hails from creator Shane Black, who penned the script for the first two installments in the series.
Development on Lethal Weapon 5 has languished in hell for quite some time, with rumors swirling Warner Bros. were in the early stages of a franchise relaunch in 2007 with Black and Chuck Mondry penning a spec script treatment for Black to direct. After a decade of no updates, Gibson and Donner would bring word in 2017 that they and Danny Glover had begun discussions for the new film, which would be planned for the final outing in the franchise, and 2020 seeing producer Dan Lin confirming that it was in active development. Though originally planned to be Donner's final film before retirement, the fate of the film was initially left hanging until late last year reports began surfacing that Gibson was in talks to direct Lethal Weapon 5 and now the star is offering some insight into what's to come.
