At the end of chapter 174 in the manga, Yuta confronts a terrifying new foe from the Culling Game that an earlier installment revealed is the cursed spirit Kurourushi, who had been lying dormant until certain conditions disappeared. Whatever these conditions were, they're clearly gone now as the special grade curse has emerged, brandishing his Festering Life Sword.

Mangaka Gege Akutami's explanation of the blade is what makes Kurourushi such a perfect opponent for Yuta. It mixes life and death or, according to the unofficial fan translation, it's where life and death cross paths. This information is critical because the prequel film and manga series Jujutsu Kaisen 0 reveal that Yuta subconsciously cursed Rika's spirit to live within his sword after she was killed in a car crash. Yuki was already forced to deal with his inadvertent sin in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 when he unknowingly severed his contract with Rika at the end, releasing her to the afterlife. Unfortunately, Yuta still continues to contend with what he did as Rika somehow still manifests in his blade. Although it's likely that what lives in his sword is either an echo of Rika or is the remaining curse that her spirit left behind, Yuta is always reminded of what he did to his fiancée even if he didn't do it intentionally.
