The Russo Brothers reveal that Jon Favreau originally didn’t want them to move forward with Iron Man’s iconic death scene in Avengers: Endgame. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame premiered in 2019 and triumphantly completed both the MCU’s Infinity Saga and Phase 3 of the franchise. Well before that in 2008, Favreau introduced the world to Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark, kicking off the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man.
Tragically, Iron Man's tenure as a superhero came to an end in Avengers: Endgame's final battle.At the end of the film, Tony was able to steal the Infinity Stones from Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his minions. Following Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) grand calculus of the multiverse, Tony heroically sacrificed his life to restore and save the world with the flick of his fingertips. Fittingly, his final words were a callback to his classic catchphrase from Favreau's original film: “I am Iron Man.”
