After a gang of wanna-be mobsters break into John Wick’s house, steal his car, and kill his dog, John comes out of retirement and reclaims his title as the world’s deadliest assassin, and in doing so seals his fate, a fate that was seemingly foretold on a brutal variant cover for his prequel comic series. John Wick’s life has been a series of tragedies, from the death of his wife, to that of his puppy, and then of course having nearly every assassin in the world out to kill him. John Wick has had a clear target on his back since he was introduced to fans, and while this target was originally a metaphorical one, it becomes quite literal on this variant cover.
In the prequel comic book John Wick#4 by Greg Pak and Matt Gaudio, John is being hunted by a gang of killers who he was originally after for destroying his hometown as a child and killing a number of people he was close with. In retaliation for his attacks in the three previous issues, the gang calls in an ex-associate of theirs who is arguably just as deadly as Wick himself. Her name is Calamity, and the other gang members put a target on John Wick’s back for her to shoot, which is perfectly captured in a variant cover for the issue.

This variant cover for John Wick#4 was done by artist Ben Garriga. The artwork depicts John Wick worn and bloody with a deep darkness in his eyes conveying nothing but pain and misery.
