James Gunn is hyping up The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special as the best thing he has ever written. Gunn has been riding high the past few months as even though The Suicide Squad was a box-office disappointment, the film was a critical hit and loved among fans while Peacemaker was a huge hit on HBO Max and was the best-reviewed entry in the DCEU. The director is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which is set for release on May 5, 2023.
While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to be Gunn's last entry in the Guardians franchise, he has one other project focused on the characters in the works. Filming at the same time as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special which is set to air on Disney+ during the holiday season of 2022, just a few months before the release of the third film. The idea and name are a homage to the infamous Star Wars: Holiday Special. Yet unlike that one, which was infamously panned by audiences (and even George Lucas), it appears The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be a much more beloved entry within its franchise.
