People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is calling for a criminal investigation into Jackass Forever, alleging the production's treatment of the animals on set was inhumane. The fourth theatrical entry in the Jackass franchise, Forever is proving to be a hit with audiences and is on track to take the number one spot at this weekend's box office. In addition to carrying on the established legacy of Jackass, which premiered as an MTV show in 2000, Forever adds a number of new members to the Jackassteam of masochistic pranksters.
This most recent outing is far from the first time the Jackass crew has involved animals in their stunts. The poster for the first movie in the franchise prominently featured an image of series veteran Johnny Knoxville being bitten on his nipple by a baby alligator. Jackass Number 2 saw several of the performers ride a teeter-totter as a bull rampaged around them. 2010's Jackass 3D featured a prank on Bam Margera, who is notoriously afraid of snakes, dropped into a snake pit, much to his shock horror.

While animal-involved stunts are nothing new for Jackass, the franchise's latest offering is now drawing the ire of PETA, which is, "calling on Los Angeles city and San Luis Obispo County prosecutors to investigate the apparent cruelty to animals depicted in the film." The organization is also encouraging potential theatergoers to boycott the movie. PETA's statement alleges that it had already petitioned the filmmakers to remove any stunts involving animals — specifying three segments involving a snake, a bull, and a tarantula — only to see the finished project included even more animal-centric gags.
