A buzz about FFXIV, the well-known MMORPG, possibly sailing for mobile devices is floating around the internet. A gaming industry leak source, Kurakasis, claims that Tencent Games and Square Enix are working on putting the journey right on your phone.
This wouldn’t be the first time Square Enix has dipped its toes into the mobile Final Fantasy pool. But let’s just say the results have been a bit…mixed. Remember Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis? It was okay, but not exactly a knockout for a lot of fans. Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia shut down last year. So, bringing a full-fledged MMORPG like FFXIV to mobile is a pretty ambitious undertaking.
Remember now that this is totally unverified. Square Enix has not formally expressed anything about it. That being said, there have been some hints in the past that Square Enix and Tencent are working on something together. Back in 2018, the two companies talked about collaborating on content. Then, in 2021, Yosuke Matsuda, who was the president of Square Enix at the time, mentioned that they had several conversations about some projects in the works with Tencent. So, the rumor isn’t entirely out of the blue.
Kurakasis’ leak offers no timeline, leaving us to wonder if this project is still in its infancy or if it is even a sure thing. So, we might have to wait a while for an official announcement.
Can Square Enix translate the intricate mechanics of FFXIV to a mobile platform without sacrificing the depth that fans adore? It’ll be interesting to see how they tackle this challenge. But if it’s a clunky, watered-down version of the original, then fans might be left feeling disappointed.
