The fights between Iron Man and theIncredible Hulk never cease to amazing — but they almost always end in the Armored Avenger's stunning defeat. Tony Stark may be a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, but his track record of defeating Hulk while wearing his iconic Hulkbuster suits is quite embarrassing for a star Avenger. But in the World War Hulk event, Stark lost for perhaps the most frustrating reason in his fighting history.
As the Civil War event began, the Illuminati — a secret group consisting of Iron Man, Reed Richards, Doctor Strange and Black Bolt — decided the Hulk was simply too dangerous to remain on Earth. They hatched a plan to launch him into space toward a deserted world where he would have peace, but the Hulk's ship went off-course and landed on Sakaar, a battle world where the Hulk had to fight to survive. While he eventually triumphed and even began a relationship, the crashed spaceship explodes and kills the Hulk's partner; a furious Hulk makes his way to Earth with the intent to attack the Illuminati, and smash anything that gets in his way.

As Manhattan is evacuated, Iron Man suits up in his Hulkbuster armor and — quite surprisingly — manages to gain the upper hand in his fight with the Hulk. He blasts Bruce Banner with a dose of nanite particles designed to calm him down and weaken him — but unfortunately, they fail. When the Hulk is reminded of his dead wife that was caught in the blast of his old ship, he retaliates with astonishing force and practically tears the Hulkbuster armor to pieces on live TV (as the fight is being broadcasted all over America).
