Upcoming sequel Indiana Jones 5 has a major plot hole from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to fix. The fifth film in the Indiana Jones franchise is tipped to potentially be the last, as Harrison Ford's adventuring archaeologist prepares to slow down and take life easy. As such, Indiana Jones 5 will need to not only continue and most likely conclude the titular hero's story, but it will also need to resolve the issues of previous entries in the franchise, too.
The problems with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull were many. Widely criticized for eschewing the traditional tone of previous Indiana Jones movies in favor of a sci-fi focus, the fourth entry into the franchise was not well-received by audiences or critics. Partly due to its unpopular sci-fi elements, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull felt too far removed from the franchise's previous titles. The introduction of the Mutt Williams character as Indiana Jones' son (and supposedly a potential successor to the franchise) was also unpopular, making Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull something of a disaster.

There is also one additional issue with the film that should be resolved by the upcoming sequel. Indiana Jones 5 following Crystal Skull final scenes attempt to give Indiana Jones a happy ending by showing him shown marrying Marion Ravenwood and being promoted to associate dean at Marshall College, despite being effectively fired from his job earlier in the film. No additional context is offered as to why he would have been rehired, much less promoted, and it's the sort of nagging plot hole that a sequel should be able to clear up.
