The release of Indiana Jones 5 will expand the reach of the franchise across five decades of film; it should also mark the end of the series, at least for now. Harrison Ford’s aging archaeologist will be on-screen once again in 2023, following a troubled production that lasted far longer than expected. James Mangold, whose directing credits include Logan and Ford v Ferrari, has stepped into the shoes of the franchise’s former director, Steven Spielberg. However, despite the injection of fresh creative blood to the series, Indiana Jones 5 should still bring the saga to some sort of definitive conclusion.
Spielberg directed the first four movies of the Indiana Jones franchise, centered around the character thought up by Star Wars creator George Lucas, including the highly revered Raiders of the Lost Ark. The movie continues to be recognized as one of the greatest adventure films of all time and is largely responsible for Ford’s continued career as leading man and action hero, along with the following films in the series. Overall, the franchise has had incredible critical and financial success, making Indiana Jones 5 almost inevitable.

Jones’ fifth outing boasts an impressive cast including Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, and Ant0nio Banderas (coming off the box-office success of Uncharted, another adventure-oriented franchise) in undisclosed roles. Indiana Jones 5 now feels closer than it has ever been which means the franchise may also be nearing its end. With the film's release looming ever closer, it may finally be time for Professor Jones to hang up his whip and hat for the last time.
