When a fearsome assembly of villains took over Avengers Mansion, their leader Baron Zemo decided to settle his old grudge with Captain America in a cruel, and at the same time petty, fashion: getting rid of Steve Roger's treasured past.
Marvel fans are aware that Captain America is known as «the man out of time.» He spent most of his life in the first half of the twentieth century before fighting valiantly in the Second World War, becoming a living legend. He then spent a few decades frozen in ice and woke up in the modern world, which looked completely foreign to him. Sure, since then Captain America has adapted brilliantly, becoming an Avenger, a leader of heroes, and an inspiration for thousands of people. But part of his life was still taken away from him: loved ones, childhood heroes, a world that will never come back. Luckily, Cap was able to recover a few mementos of his past, which he preserved until the Masters of Evil showed up.

In Avengers vol. 1 #273 by Roger Stern, John Buscema, and Paul Becton, Baron Zemo launches his assault on the Avengers. After months of planning and surveillance, Zemo's new Masters of Evil storm Avengers Mansion when the Earth's Mightiest Heroes have their guard down, and take their faithful butler Jarvis captive, along with Captain America, Black Knight, and Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau). Hercules recklessly charges in to take back the Mansion and gets beaten into a coma by the heavyweights of the Masters of Evil. Zemo takes this chance to exact revenge on his hated nemesis Captain America and forces him to watch while Mr. Hyde mercilessly beats Jarvis, leaving him hospitalized and blind in one eye. The
