Inception follows its main characters through different layers of dreams within dreams, and even though it can be confusing to follow sometimes, Christopher Nolan and crew added details that show whose dream they’re in, as is the case of Arthur’s dream, and it's linked to his totem. Christopher Nolan has become best known for the themes he addresses in his movies, mostly those of time and identity, and in 2010, he took these a step further by also exploring the complexity of dreams in Inception.
Inception follows Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), a professional thief who steals information by infiltrating the subconscious of his targets, extracting and implanting ideas in the process and as needed. When he’s offered to have his criminal history erased so he can go back to his family after years of being on the run, Cobb takes on a complex mission that requires the help of his team, which includes architects, chemists, and more. Together, they build dream scenarios with different layers so they can extract the information they need from business heir Robert Michael Fischer (Cillian Murphy), but their mission gets more and more complicated in each layer. Cobb’s team has everything carefully planned and takes all types of precautions in order to not blow their covers or get trapped in someone else’s dream, and to keep themselves safe, they use totems.
