The Ghostbusters franchise is set to expand through in-canon comics published by Dark Horse. The announcement was made during Ghostbusters Day, a yearly celebration that takes place on the day that the first Ghostbusters movie was originally released in 1984.
Ghostbusters actually has a long history with comic books. Marvel Comics originally co-owned the rights for the first adaptation, based on the animated series The Real Ghostbusters, published in Europe through the Marvel UK imprint. After a very long absence from comic book stands, the Ghostbusters rights were acquired by IDW in 2008, and the company began publishing a series of one-shots and miniseries, which then spawned three ongoing series. Some of the most interesting products from this period were crossovers between the Ghostbusters and other franchises that IDW held the rights to, such as Mars Attacks, X-Files, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and and even the Transformers. After IDW lost the rights in 2020, however, fans did not expect to see the Ghostbusters come back to comics so soon, but that has changed following Ghostbusters Day 2022.

Ghostbusters Day started in 2016 and takes place every June 8. This year, fans of the beloved paranormal franchise were treated to a number of announcements, including an animated show on Netflix, an animated feature film, and a new live-action movie that will be a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
