In the years since its release, Final Fantasy Tactics has spawned a number of clones — most of which are also published by Square Enix. Recent examples include Triangle Strategy and the upcoming The DioField Chronicle. However,one of these FF Tactics clones made by Square Enix is stuck on the iPod, which is a real shame since it's also one of the best.
Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes came out in the summer 2008, which happens to be the same year I got an iPod Classic. The game had character designs from Yusuke Naora, who designed characters forFront Mission 4 and served as art director on a number of Final Fantasy games like FF7, FF10, and FF15. The game uses Tune Troopers, characters pulled from an iPod's library of songs, which is still a really cool feature almost 15 years later. A song in the iPod's library can turn into a wide variety of characters, with different classes and abilities. Job classes include Mage, Knight, and Monk — which any fan of FF Tactics or games like Final Fantasy 5 should recognize. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I got the game and played it a lot. Then, much like my actual iPod Classic, it was forgotten for a full decade.

That all changed recently when I decided to charge up my iPod and see what kind of music was still on there. It hadn't been used since around 2012, but once it was charged and ready to go, I was reminded of Song Summoner. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and while I had completely forgotten about the game, memories of it started flooding back.
