In an age of hero shooters, Sega is looking to shake things up by turning those heroes into thieves. Enter Hyenas, a new multiplayer game from Creative Assembly, the studio behind Alien: Isolation and the Total War franchise.
Hyenas pits five teams of three players against each other as they carry out heists on space freighters. These ships are loaded with pop culture items from earth, and apparently they’re quite valuable in the future. Thus, players will have to “engage, evade, exploit, and steal” their way through both PvP and PvE encounters. This isn’t a battle royale: your goal is to steal as much as you can and get out.
Those first three verbs — engage, evade, and exploit — are actually how the game’s heroes are categorized too. Some are good at engaging in combat, others are better at evading such encounters, and still others are more equipped to exploit the space freighters themselves. Essentially, you’ll choose between shooting, stealthing, and hacking. No matter which type you gravitate towards, gravity itself will also play a part in each heist. This game is set in space, which means there will moments of zero gravity during gunfights and escapes.
Another vibe Hyena puts out there is irreverence: watching the official announcement trailer (below), it’s clear the game isn’t taking itself too seriously. One hacking-type character wears a VR helmet during the heist; another sports a full-on Richard Nixon mask. The loot seems to be playfully embracing the Sega game catalogue too — a Sonic the Hedgehog key chain can be spotted in the trailer. Furthermore, the whole thing has a comic book cel-shaded art style.
