In MultiVersus, players will begin with only four characters to choose from, and players can unlock additional characters, such as the enormous robot tank, Iron Giant. Players will need to collect resources in order to unlock the character of their choosing, and different characters will cost different amounts of resources. Before unlocking a character, players will be able to view their requirements on their locked character page. Players will not need to unlock Jake the Dog, Harley Quinn, Tazmanian Devil, or Shaggy in MultiVersus.
If players prefer to not spend actual money, they can unlock characters using Gold, the collectible in-game currency. Players will earn Gold by playing the game, such as by playing public matches. When players complete rounds in a match, win, and level up, they will earn more Gold from the match. If players manage to level up and win their match after playing all three rounds in a best-of-three match, they can earn 350 Gold. Even if players do not win, they can still earn 40 to 100 Gold depending on leveling and how many rounds were played. Of note, players will not earn Gold by playing Custom Games. Players can also earn Gold by clearing Missions. At the beginning of the game, players will find some easy introductory Missions that can be cleared to earn around 3,000 Gold, which is exactly the cost of unlocking Batman in MultiVersus. However, this will not be quite enough to earn players the Iron Giant, which costs 3,000 Gold. Of note, all unlockable characters range from 1,000 to 3,000 Gold.
